How Can Smart Controls Keep Guests Comfortable And Cut Costs?

There’s a lot of buzz in the technology world around the “Internet of Things” (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). Do these new technologies have anything to offer hotels?

Two big areas that these technologies can help are in monitoring and control. For example, wireless cameras can monitor activity, and artificial intelligence can constantly keep a watchful eye for anything suspicious or unusual.

An even bigger opportunity for hotels is to use them for reducing energy bills. Energy monitors allow hotel owners to keep an eye on energy consumption and be made aware when machinery, lighting or heating has been left on accidentally. Ultimately, though, the way to significant savings is by turning things off, or turning them down.

Here too, smart technologies have an important role to play. For example, heating accounts for around 50% of a hotel’s energy consumption, representing an enormous overhead. But smart controls offer a significant opportunity to reduce this.

Just as motion sensors switch off lights in rooms that aren’t being used, some “Building Energy Management Systems” (BEMS) such as Genius Hub can automatically turn down the radiator when a room is empty or the guest has opened the window. In this way, the University of Strathclyde estimates that Genius Control can cut heating costs by 48%.

An important advantage of this system is that savings can be achieved without disrupting staff or guests. The automatic control makes it a “fit and forget” solution. Optionally, staff can also easily control temperatures directly from the reception desk, to respond to customer requests or to completely shut off heating to rooms that won’t be needed. The same display shows room temperatures and allows staff to spot faulty radiators before they cause a complaint. Smart heating controls offer a great way to save energy while improving a guest’s stay.
