Despite industry reports that the UK’s regional hospitality market is in year on year profit decline, the team at Hampshire’s leading independent hotel, New Place, managed by Legacy Hotels and Resorts, is celebrating news of impressive growth over the past financial year.
With a record commercial growth of 17% in revenue and 42% on the hotel’s bottom line, the past 12 months have proved some of the most successful in the latest chapter of historic hotel New Place, located in Shirrell Heath, just outside the Hampshire village of Wickham.
In contrast to the latest Hospitality Intelligence HotStats data that shows a fall in profits for regional hotels in recent months, New Place has welcomed a record number of over 50,000 guests to stay in and enjoy the grounds of its stunning Grade 1 listed manor house, and seen a rise in room revenue of 10%, increase of food & beverage sales of 28% and record number of weddings celebrated at the venue throughout the year.
‘Over the past year we have seen a lot of determination and hard work really pay off,’ says General Manager, Richard Powell. ‘We had a record Christmas period, the venue’s highest in seven years, and believe our recent achievements have been due to our efforts to engage with local and business communities, and the focus of our amazing teams on excellent service and maintenance of our beautiful location, which has seen guest satisfaction scores rise to over 90%.’
In addition to becoming a patron of the Hampshire Chamber of Commerce, champion for Business South and member of the Meeting Industry Association, New Place has been recognised and shortlisted by judging panels of a host of industry awards, including the Southampton Hoteliers Association, Beautiful South and national Venue Awards.
The hotel’s success is also a reflection of how the team has avoided any complacency from the investment of £1.3 million since new owners bought the property in 2017 and the plans for many more changes ahead.
‘We have been exploring new ways for both businesses and leisure guests to use and enjoy the site,’ explains James Mahaffey, Director of Sales. ‘As well as corporate team-building sessions, networking events and staff parties, our family fun days and outdoor cinema proved huge hits, so we are repeating them this year, along with Murder Mysteries, Comedy Dining Nights and Wine & Dine evenings.’
The hotel has also been paying attention to its digital presence with invigorated social media creating a loyal online following and an average 4.3 star rating from over 600 reviews on Google, 4.4 stars from 450 reviews on Facebook and 4 stars from 1,800 reviews, giving a ‘Certificate of Excellence’, on renowned hospitality site, Trip Advisor.
‘Things are moving in the right direction, but this is really just the beginning,’ says Richard. ‘As we both offer and learn more, we are able to offer both corporate and leisure guests the best possible experience of a truly unique venue, and we are looking forward to the year ahead.’
