Young’s Hotels Have Named Epilepsy Society Their Charity Of The Year

Epilepsy Society is thrilled to announce that it has been named Young’s Hotels Charity of the Year.

Staff at the chain of hotels were inspired by their colleague, Nikki McCarthy who has epilepsy and is scheduled to have life-changing brain surgery. She is undergoing pre-assessment tests at the charity’s Chalfont Centre in Buckinghamshire.

Staff have already raised £6,276.99 for the charity through events such as bike rides and pub games.

Nikki said: “I was thrilled that Young’s Hotels chose Epilepsy Society as their Charity of the Year. They chose the charity because epilepsy affects three members of staff that we know of. It shows how people orientated they are choosing a cause that is personal to their people”.

Nikki was diagnosed with epilepsy 11 years ago after suddenly starting to find herself waking up on the floor with unexplained injuries.

She is due to have brain surgery at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in the New Year. She said: “It’s a topic that people shy away from as it’s all a bit too dark and scary but for me and many others like myself, it’s a real life choice that has to be made”.

A few of the Young’s staff visited Epilepsy Society on 21 November to present Chief Executive Officer  Clare Pelham, with the cheque and to have a tour of the state-of-the-art research labs.

The visitors were able to see where DNA samples are sequenced and some of the cutting-edge technology that is used to help diagnose epilepsy..

Although Nikki has visited the prestigious Research Centre before for assessments, she said: “it was a wonderful insight into what really goes on and how revolutionary their research is. I was amazed and moved at what Epilepsy Society has been able to achieve and what they hope to achieve”.

Epilepsy Society have a special connection with Young’s as in 1980, John Young, the great-great-grandson of the founder of the Brewery, was a governor for the National Society of Epilepsy, as Epilepsy Society was formerly known. He was appointed a CBE in 1975 for his services to charity.

The money raised will help to support the charity’s ground-breaking research.

Clare Pelham, CEO at Epilepsy Society, said: “We are very pleased to announce our partnership with Young’s Hotels and are delighted that they’ve named us as their Charity of the Year. It is really heart-warming to see how staff have been inspired to raise money for us because three of their colleagues have epilepsy. One in 100 people have epilepsy and too often we hear people talking about the stigma of epilepsy, particularly in the workplace. But Young’s Hotels demonstrate a very positive approach to supporting staff with the condition and really helping to make a difference. We look forward to working with them over the coming year.”
